”nothing less than extraordinary” ~ Motueka Music Society
Formed in Wellington in 2010, the New Zealand Guitar Quartet has quickly developed a following with invitations to perform both locally and overseas. NZGQ members Owen Moriarty, John Couch, Christopher Hill and Jane Curry have garnered acclaim as soloists on concert stages around the world and in a multitude of international guitar competitions, with each member contributing their individual strengths toward creating an exciting, dynamic and engaging ensemble.
Career highlights include the New Zealand premiere of the Concerto Andaluz by Joaquin Rodrigo with the Nelson Symphony (also performed with the Capital Concert Orchestra in Canberra, Australia), busy tour schedules with Chamber Music NZ and Arts on Tour, and concerts in the Adam International Chamber Music Festival, the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour and Christchurch Arts Festival. Covering a wide range of repertoire from the renaissance to the 21st century, the NZGQ has been praised for its diverse programming, technical brilliance and polished ensemble skills. This coming concert season includes five concerts in Beijing and an 18 concert tour with Arts on Tour (New Zealand) mid 2017.
The NZGQ regularly commission new works, and recent additions to the quartet’s programme include Black Star (Homage to David Bowie) by Australian composer Marian Budos and Aotearoa Suite by New Zealand composer Bruce Paine. Both works will be released on CD in early 2017.
